Acne

Acne vulgaris. Prevention, Natural home remedies – Grow Youthful growyouthful.com

“..Causes of acne

Acne is most common at puberty because the surge of hormones at this time stimulates the sebaceous (oil-producing glands) in the skin and makes them prone to blockages and infection. In adolescence, acne is usually caused by an increase in testosterone that occurs in both males and females at this time. The testosterone is associated with an enlargement of the sebaceous glands and an increase in sebum (waxy oil) production.
Several hormones have been linked to acne, including those that change around puberty and menstrual cycles. Taking pharmaceutical anabolic steroids (which mimic testosterone) can also cause acne.
Milk. Dairy products can cause acne. (3,5,9) Dairy products promote a hormone called insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1), and may also promote the production of some types of estrogens. IGF-1 levels peak in the teenage years, and may be abnormally high if you consume a lot of dairy products.
I suspect this may apply more to pasteurised dairy products rather than raw dairy products, but could not find any research to confirm this.
Sugar. A high-sugar, high-starch diet is associated with acne. (3,4)

Minor causes / triggers:
Oily processed foods.
Constipation.
Oil-based cosmetics.
Lack of fresh vegetables and fruit.
Dehydration.

The 2 MOST Common Causes Of Eczema And 7 Ways To REVERSE It! By Dr. Mark Hyman healthy-holistic-living.com
“..Let me be more specific. If I had to narrow down eczema to two primary causes, I would say:

Leaky gut. Medically called “increased intestinal permeability”. This is a sign of a good gut gone bad. Leaky gut creates a low-grade inflammation in reaction to food particles (deemed foreign by your immune system) that literally leak through your gut wall. This causes food sensitivities, especially to gluten and dairy, which are the biggest food causes of eczema. Leaky gut also triggers many other health problems including fatigue, brain fog, headaches, depression, allergies, sinus problems, irritable bowel, reflux, joint pain, skin diseases such as acne and eczema, autoimmune diseases and more. Inflammation also causes weight gain which is triggered byinsulin resistance, food sensitivities and food allergies.
Abnormal gut flora. Getting rid of the overgrowth of bad bugs and yeast can make a huge difference to eliminate eczema. This is called dysbiosis. It is when the 3 pounds of bugs in your gut become out of balance driving inflammation. Yeast overgrowth is a common cause of eczema. It can be caused by a high-sugar, refined carb, low-fiber, processed diet. Yeast overgrowth also can be triggered by the use of antibiotics, steroids, hormones and even the birth control pill.

While some of this advice may be useful, there is very little discussion of nutrition and lifestyle in relation to melanoma skin cancer prevention. This article provides key research-based insights on lifestyle factors that influence the development of melanoma skin cancer and compounds and strategies to prevent it…

Plants Fight Skin Cancer

Phenolic compounds in plants contain anti-carcinogenic potential. Flavonols, lignins, stilbenes, and phenolic acids are synthesized by the plant to protect against the sun’s rays, chemicals, pathogens, pests, and are used to repair injury. These compounds not only protect the plant for survival, but consuming plants rich in phenolic compounds can also protect you from skin cancer.

Naturally occurring phenolic compounds in food are more readily available to the body for use than synthetic compounds found in many supplements. Plants exhibit skin cancer prevention in the following ways:..

Compounds That Help Protect Against Melanoma Skin Cancer

Adding these antioxidant rich compounds to your diet can improve your skin’s natural defenses:

Caffeic Acid: Found in spinach leaves, olive oil, apples, coffee, wine, and cabbage
Tannins: Contained in a variety of fruits and vegetables, nuts, coffee, and tea
Resveratrol: This type of stilbene is found in grapes, berries, and peanuts. Resveratrol helps to inhibit the over-production of melanin
Anthocyanins: Eat blackberries, bilberries, and honeyberries
EGCG: Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) has an anti-proliferative effect on cancer cells. Green tea is a rich source of this cancer fighting compound
Quercetin: Protects against genetic alterations leading to irreversible carcinogenesis. Eating whole apples, including their skin, helps protect against harmful UV damage
Ursolic Acid: Holy basil tea contains ursolic acid which shuts down cancer growth and down-regulates the genes associated with cancer growth
Luteolin: A major anticancer flavonoid, luteolin is found in medicinal herbs like chrysanthemum flowers, as well as in fruits and vegetables including celery, parsley, broccoli, carrots, and cabbage

Supplementing with Vitamin D3

When the region where you live or weather conditions prevent the sun’s rays from breaking through the clouds, vitamin D3 supplementation is ideal. Vitamin D3 is the active form of vitamin D and regulates the vitamin D nuclear receptor (VDR) for proper immune support.

Foods containing vitamin D include wild caught fish, eggs, mushrooms, and fermented dairy − but they only contain small quantities. Supplements like cod liver oil and sublingual vitamin drops and sprays are excellent strategies for maintaining healthy vitamin D levels….”

Natural Skin Health: Dermatologist’s Diet Recommendations for Healthy Skin

by Cynthia Bailey, M.D. on October 17, 2009 in Diet, Nutrition, & Natural Health .drbaileyskincare.com

“The foods you eat should be packed with vitamins and minerals. When most of the foods you eat are nutritionally rich foods, your skin will be its healthiest and most beautiful! This is far from the magic bullet we all want in our fast paced lives; healthy eating requires real commitment.

What are nutritionally rich foods? Every time we buy manufactured food there’s nutritional information on the labels. In fact, we’re bombarded with nutritional information. Even junk foods list vitamin content. It’s confusing and so I use my common sense to figure out what foods are packed with vitamins and minerals. I recommend that the majority of what you eat be high nutrition foods including: ..

The Dermatologist’s Diet for Natural Skin Health

* Eat mostly vegetables, fruits and grains- organic or naturally farmed.
* Limit meats, fish, dairy and eggs-use them as an embellishment to your meal, not the main portion of what you eat-and be sure they’re from naturally farmed animals
* Use virgin olive oil
* Consider processed foods as a treat, not your main source of calories and nutrition”

Home Remedies to Solve Dry Skin Problems This Winter
Winter is a season that brings many pleasurable experiences, but dry skin is not one of them. It is one of the most common problems that people have to deal with during the winter days.

The skin tends to become drier due to the drop in the temperature and also humidity. This causes the skin to become dehydrated, leading to dry skin patches as well as irritation or itchiness.

Best Moisturizer for Dry Sensitive Skin

1. Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is one of the popular and effective treatments for dry skin during the winter months. It contains ample amounts of fatty acids that can compensate for any loss of moisture from the skin.

It also has protein as well as vitamin E that help retain moisture in your skin.

Also, its antioxidant property is good for your skin’s overall health. In addition, because this oil is nongreasy, it is easily absorbed by the skin.

* Warm up some coconut oil in a microwave for a few seconds and apply it on your skin before bathing. Massage it gently so that the oil penetrates into the skin. Wait 10 minutes, then take a bath or shower. Repeat this remedy once daily.

* When suffering from extremely dry skin, you can apply coconut on your somewhat damp skin after taking a bath.

2. Honey
Honey is considered another natural moisturizer loaded with antioxidant, antimicrobial and humectant properties.

Any of the following remedies can be used once daily:

* Before taking a bath or shower, rub some raw honey all over your body and massage gently using circular motions. Wait 10 minutes, then take a bath or shower.

* Mix equal amounts of honey and glycerin. Apply it on your hands, wait 10 minutes and then rinse it off with lukewarm water.

3. Olive Oil

Another effective remedy for dry skin is definitely olive oil. Olive oil contains antioxidants such as vitamin E that help neutralize the oxidant effect of free radicals that damage collagen, which causes skin dryness. It also works as a great natural moisturizer.

Plus, the healthy fatty acids in it can soothe and condition dry skin all over your body.

* For daily use, rub some lukewarm olive oil on your hands, legs and other areas with dry skin. Massage lightly using circular motions and wait 30 minutes. Take a shower to rinse it off, then apply a light moisturizer.

* For weekly use, add enough olive oil to 1 tablespoon of brown sugar to make a paste. Dampen your skin, then use this mixture as a gentle scrub. Leave it for 15 minutes, then wash it off with lukewarm water.

4. Milk Cream

Another milk-based product that can combat skin dryness is milk cream. The high-fat content in milk cream works as a natural moisturizer for dry skin.

The lactic acid in milk helps exfoliate the dry, dead surface of the skin and accelerates collagen production, too. It also helps maintain the proper pH balance of your skin.

* For daily use, rub some fresh milk cream on your dry skin. Allow it to sit for 10 minutes, then rinse it off thoroughly with lukewarm water.

* Another option for daily use is to thoroughly mix 1 teaspoon each of milk cream and milk. Stir in a few drops of lemon juice. Apply the paste on your face, hands, and legs. Leave it on for 15 minutes, then wash it off with water.

5. Aloe Vera

When it comes to skin dryness, aloe vera is just the ingredient that you need to make your skin soft and vibrant even during the winter season.

It acts as a wonderful moisturizer and improves your skin tone. It also relieves itchiness and prevents cracking and flaking associated with dry skin.

A study published in Skin Research and Technology reports that freeze-dried aloe vera extract is effective at improving skin hydration due to its humectant properties.

1. Extract the gel from an aloe vera leaf.
2. Apply it all over your body.
3. Massage for a few minutes to help the gel penetrate deep into the skin.
4. Wait 30 minutes, then rinse it off using lukewarm water.
5. Do this once or twice daily.
