National Ataxia Foundation – Diagnosis,
“…People with ataxia have problems with coordination because parts of the nervous system that control movement and balance are affected. Ataxia may affect the fingers, hands, arms, legs, body, speech, and eye movements. The word ataxia is often used to describe a symptom of incoordination which can be associated with infections, injuries, other diseases, or degenerative changes in the central nervous system. ..

Treat Environmental Causes of Ataxia Naturally
By Dr. Craig A. Maxwell –
Jan 20, 2014
“…Three Common Environmental Causes of Ataxia

The reason I refer to the following causes of ataxia as environmental is because the neurological damage is unrelated to genetic or injury-related factors. These causes of ataxia are the easiest to narrow down and treat if you know what to look for.

Autoimmune Disease

Autoimmune disease occurs when your immune system mistakenly attacks your own healthy tissues. This can cause chronic inflammation in your body and brain and result in chronic neurological distress.

The most common causes of autoimmune ataxia are:

Thyroid Disease

Thyroid disease affects millions of Americans and has so many different symptoms associated with it that it can be difficult to diagnose. Autoimmune thyroid conditions such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and Grave’s disease can attack your thyroid and prevent it from functioning optimally.

Any type of disruption in your normal endocrine function can have a negative impact on your cerebral or cerebellar function. As a matter of fact, ataxia and other central nervous system abnormalities may be one of the first symptoms of thyroid disease.

Thyroid disease specifically attacks a portion of the cerebellum called the superior vermis; the top portion that connects the two hemispheres of your cerebellum. This can cause the unsteady gait and uncoordinated clumsiness associated with ataxia.

Lupus is an autoimmune disorder characterized by extreme fatigue, muscle and joint pain, fever, chest pain, photosensitivity, nasal and oral lesions, and a tell-tale butterfly-shaped rash across the bridge of the nose. As lupus progresses, antibodies may develop against the central nervous system, causing ataxia.

Celiac Disease

Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder characterized by the inability to digest the protein found in wheat, barley, and rye. Recent findings have suggested that in addition to gastrointestinal symptoms and chronic sinus problems, celiac disease can also have an impact on central nervous system function.

Studies have shown that celiac disease and ataxia may be part of the disease entity whereby the immune system indiscriminately destroys any area of the body affected by gluten. This includes the gut, the enteric nervous system (the gut brain), and the central nervous system.

Nutritional Deficiencies

Nutritional deficiencies have reached near-epidemic proportions due to poor diet and digestive malabsorption disorders. A deficiency in vitamin B12, CoQ10, Vitamin E, and magnesium can all contribute to the development of sensory ataxia…”
Ataxia – Causes – Symptoms – Diagnosis – Treatment
“…The causes are mostly related to our nervous system.

Ataxia is a condition where a person lacks coordination during voluntary movement. He walks with an unstable gait and loses balance. His trunk may sway from side-to-side. He may show symptoms like slurring of speech, involuntary eye movements, difficulty with swallowing and tremor with movement. MRI scans helps in its diagnosis and the treatment of the conditions depends on its cause.

Ataxic Cerebral Palsy
“… ataxic cerebral palsy is caused by abnormal brain development or by brain damage. Infections in either the mother or the unborn baby and exposure to toxins can cause the fetal brain to not develop properly. During the first two trimesters, the fetal brain is particularly vulnerable to developing abnormally.

Ataxic cerebral palsy may be caused by lesions (holes) in the brain’s white matter; these are called periventricular leukomalacias. Damage to the white matter affects the entire body because this part of the brain sends signals to the entire nervous system, as well as signals within the brain. The brain’s white matter is especially vulnerable during the third trimester. ..”

Cerebral Palsy: Causes, Treatment and Prevention
“…In many cases, the cause of cerebral palsy is not known, so there is nothing that can be done to prevent it. In spite of improvements in the care of pregnant women and sick babies, the number of babies with cerebral palsy seems to be increasing. This is due, in part, to the survival of an increasing number of very premature babies, who are at high risk of cerebral palsy…”

Treatment Options in Degenerative Cerebellar Ataxia: A Systematic Review,
“..Many patients are interested in alternative therapies and express a desire to pursue treatment with nonprescription medications. Antioxidants are one treatment approach tested in ataxia patients. Nine FA patients, ages 11 to 19 years, received idebenone 5 mg/kg per day for 12 months. ICARS was performed before treatment and every 3 months after starting the treatment for 1 year. There was improvement in the ICARS subscores for fine motor skills and eye movements. Patients with milder disease states and a lower number of triplet repeats also showed improvements in kinetic and gait function. Serum idebenone levels correlated negatively with the number of repeats, suggesting that more-affected individuals may need higher doses to achieve benefit. Of note, there was no improvement in echocardiography or neurophysiologic testing of the peripheral nervous system.[33]..”

Vitamin Treatment For Hereditary Ataxia Brings Dramatic Improvements

April 11, 2001
“…The researchers discovered that some patients with hereditary ataxia have a decreased level of coenzyme Q10, or CoQ10, in their muscles. CoQ10, also called ubiquinone, is a vitamin-like substance that plays a key role in the production of energy within cells. It is naturally present in small amounts in various foods. ..”

Cerebellar ataxia | What Doctors Don’t Tell You
“…Several readers say a nutritional approach is the best way to treat this condition. Lynn, a nutritional therapist, has a lot of experience in dealing with cerebellar ataxia as her entire family on her father’s side have had it. She has some useful advice:
“I have had symptoms of this in the past, but I discovered nutritional therapy by accident and had incredible positive results from following a macrobiotic diet. Following that, I decided to train to become a nutritional therapist so I could help others with similar problems. In your case, first of all I would get information from a hair mineral test to look for toxicities and imbalances. I would also check for parasites and Candida, …… ..

Magnesium Deficiency Syndrome
“..First and foremost, magnesium chloride is the most natural form of magnesium. In the age of overly processed food and beverages, truly natural is often the safest way to go. According to Jack Samuels, president of the Truth in Labeling Campaign, many oral magnesium supplements are chelated with nuetrotoxic substances. While forms of oral magnesium supplementation such as magnesium citrate may be viable option, it is difficult to acertain teh integrity and quality of the production process.Other forms of magnesium, such as magnesium sulfate, are not easy to assimilate; they are quickly eliminated from the body. However, those individuals who enjoy using Epsom Salt for bath can use both the Epsom Salt and Magnesium Sulfate if preferred.
Due to its laxative effect, all oral magnesium supplements are difficult to use to overcome a magnesium deficiency. Transdermal magesium therapy is clearly the best choice. It is safe, convenient, affordable, and effective. Studies done by Dr. Sealy with volunteers have shown that after four weeks of foot soaking in magnesium chloride, 75% of the volunteers showed a signfiicant increase in intracellular magnesium levels.By bypassing the entire digestive system, individuals can be certain that the magnesium is being delivered exactly where it is needed: at the treatment site and/or intracellularly…”

“Noa has worn glasses since November. She was diagnosed with amblyopia with a 20 degree cross. This number has been steady since the beginning. Today she was scheduled for corrective eye surgery in Minneapolis. We went in to have her alignment checked before surgery started. One orthoptist checked her alignment and was puzzled so she brought in a second orthoptist for another opinion. Both doctors couldn’t see any reason for surgery as they were reading only a 6 degree crossing. That small of a misalignment is inoperable. They sent us over to the surgeon and he checked her alignment and decided surgery was completely unnecessary. The only explanation he offered was that for some unknown reason her brain made a connection with her eyes that it has never made before. The brain is what is causing the crossing, not her eyes. He said it is unheard of that this connection would be made normally in a child with cerebral palsy. Nothing changed between the scheduling of the surgery and today other than prayer. We prayed, He answered. All I can say is hallelujah from the bottom of my heart. God loves us. He still heals people and will never stop doing miracles.
