Adolescence: Preparing for Lifelong Health and Wellness – YouTube

Published on Aug 21, 2015

Adolescence is a critical stage of development during which physical, intellectual, emotional, and psychological changes occur. While adolescence is a relatively healthy period of life, adolescents begin to make lifestyle choices and establish behaviors that affect both their current and future health. During this transition from childhood to adulthood, serious health and safety issues such as motor vehicle crashes, violence, substance use, and risky sexual behaviors can adversely affect adolescents and young adults. Parents have an important role in helping their adolescents stay healthy, but there are other influences on the choices adolescents make. Of the 42 million U.S. adolescents, age 10-19 years, 91% are enrolled in school, making schools and academic institutions an ideal place to foster lifelong healthy behaviors. Other community level interventions can also make the healthy choice the easy choice.

QUESTION: ” Lee, Both my teenage son and daughter are getting into bodybuilding. What are the best and safest supplements for teens?” ANSWER: Well Mike, as a father of three boys, I have been through the teenage years, and recognize your concerns about choosing safe supplements for your teenagers as they start weight training. My advice is to keep it as natural as possible, because safety comes first. Unfortunately there are many supplements on the market which are shady at best. Stick with the tried and true supplements which include a high quality protein supplement and a multivitamin.

Hey Jonathan, creatine monohydrate from Labrada Nutrition is safe to take when you’re a teenager, however we would recommend that you first understanding your total calorie intake for the day, along with the amount of protein, carbs, and fats your eating roughly per day. Our whole food nutrition is the foundation for performance, if we do not have balanced nutrition plan no supplement will help you as much as it could with a balanced diet. Hope this helps explain things, at your age you would ideally be consuming roughly 20 calories per ideal body pound per day as a growing young man. Wish you all the best with your fitness goals. “

“..Who Needs Magnesium?

Magnesium is used in the process of metabolism. The body consumes mega amounts—especially when under stress of any kind. This means athletes can become very prone to magnesium deficiency. Hyperkalaemia, excessive calcium depositing in the soft tissue, ligaments and joints, is a typical sign of magnesium deficiency, as are cramping and restless legs.

As tissue cell levels of magnesium drop, calcium can leach out of the bones and settle in these places. You may also find it settling at injury sites or areas of low pH in the body, as calcium is also used by the body to alkalize and buffer acid by-products.

We are exposed to large amounts of calcium in foods these days, but relatively low levels of magnesium. It is often the case that simply increasing magnesium exposure can balance and control that excess calcium…”

Epsom Salt Vs. Magnesium Chloride by MEG BRANNAGAN Last Updated: Aug 14, 2017 livestrong.com
“..Magnesium Chloride

Magnesium chloride is a type of salt that originally comes from seawater. It is often taken orally to resolve mild hypomagnesemia, or it may be given intravenously for those who have severe deficiencies. In some situations, magnesium chloride is used as an emergency medication for a heart attack. Different types of supplements may have varying amounts of elemental magnesium, which means that not all magnesium in the supplement is available for absorption by the body. According to the National Institutes of Health, magnesium chloride has approximately 12 percent magnesium available for absorption. Alternatively, magnesium sulfate, or that found in Epsom salt, contains only 10 percent magnesium available for absorption.
Considerations

Although both Epsom salt and magnesium chloride may be given for the treatment of some conditions, consult your doctor if you have any side effects. While Epsom salt is approved by the FDA as safe to ingest, read the directions to avoid overconsumption. Magnesium chloride may interfere with other drugs you might be taking, including some thyroid replacement medications and certain antibiotics. If you must take magnesium to replace a deficiency, your doctor can determine the proper dosage and what drugs are safe to use…”

The best harvesting methods are from open salt lakes via natural dehydration in evaporation tanks, which provides a food grade quality for drinking water or tofu. Dehydration of the salt brine sends the sodium chloride to the top layer, which is skimmed off to make table salt. This process leaves behind the magnesium chloride and other trace minerals in a natural mineral package from Nature.

When you soak in a magnesium flakes bath or footsoak the hot water helps the skin to open up and absorb more magnesium. In addition, the body can release toxins and metabolism wastes through the skin. Whatever you can excrete via the skin lifts the load off the kidney and liver to process and eliminate. And it feels so fantastic! Add a bit of candle light and some fragrant essential oils and you’ve got the perfect pampering bath. Relax, revive, replenish!

Even in the first ten minutes you can experience an overwhelming relaxation and sensation of calmness wind its way through your system. A surge of peace flows through your limbs, then into the heart. Medical: Is your blood pressure too “low” or “high”?

Understanding Blood Pressure Readings heart.org
“..What do your blood pressure numbers mean?
The only way to know (diagnose) if you have high blood pressure (HBP or hypertension) is to have your blood pressure tested. Understanding your blood pressure numbers is key to controlling high blood pressure.

Healthy and unhealthy blood pressure ranges
Learn what’s considered normal, as recommended by the American Heart Association…

Your blood pressure is recorded as two numbers:

Systolic blood pressure (the upper number) — indicates how much pressure your blood is exerting against your artery walls when the heart beats.

Diastolic blood pressure (the lower number) — indicates how much pressure your blood is exerting against your artery walls while the heart is resting between beats.

Which number is more important?
Typically, more attention is given to systolic blood pressure (the top number) as a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease for people over 50. In most people, systolic blood pressure rises steadily with age due to the increasing stiffness of large arteries, long-term build-up of plaque and an increased incidence of cardiac and vascular disease. However, elevated systolic or diastolic blood pressure alone may be used to make a diagnosis of high blood pressure. And, according to recent studies, the risk of death from ischemic heart disease and stroke doubles with every 20 mm Hg systolic or 10 mm Hg diastolic increase among people from age 40 to 89.”

The Benefits of Cholesterol Katie – Wellness Mama 44 Comments Updated: March 5, 2018 wellnessmama.com
“..Cholesterol and Heart Disease

This is where things get interesting. As I already mentioned, this lipid is necessary for the body and is found in the cell membranes of all animal tissue. In short, without it, we would die. In fact, the lower a person’s levels, the higher their risk of death and high cholesterol levels have more recently been correlated to longevity…

The Benefits of Cholesterol

It turns out that not only is it not as harmful as once believed, it has a variety of benefits to the body. Even writing that cholesterol is beneficial may seem crazy in light of the dietary dogma of the last half century, but its importance is well-supported by research!

In fact, cholesterol has the following benefits in the body:

It is vital for the formation and maintenance of cell walls
It is used by nerve cells as insulation
The liver uses it to make bile, which is needed for digestion of fats
It is a precursor to Vitamin D and in the presence of sunlight, the body converts cholesterol to Vitamin D
It is needed for creation of vital hormones, including sex hormones
It helps support the immune system by improving t-cell signaling and may fight inflammation
It is necessary for the absorption of fats and fat-soluble vitamins (A,D, E and K)
It is a precursor for making the steroid hormones cortisol and aldosterone which are necessary for regulation of circadian rhythms, weight, mental health and more
It is used in the uptake of serotonin in the brain
It may serve as an antioxidant in the body
As it is used in the maintenance of cell walls, including the cells in the digestive system, there is evidence that cholesterol is necessary for gut integrity and avoiding leaky gut
The body sends cholesterol from the liver to places of inflammation and tissue damage to help repair it..”

how to lower blood pressure naturally August 1, 2014

High blood pressure plays a contributing role in more than 15% of deaths in the United States, according to a Harvard study. Although it causes no symptoms, high blood pressure boosts the risks of leading killers such as heart attack and stroke, as well as aneurysms, cognitive decline, and kidney failure. Twenty-eight percent of Americans have high blood pressure and don’t know it, according to the American Heart Association. If you haven’t had yours checked in 2 years, see a doctor.

While medication can lower blood pressure, it may cause side effects such as leg cramps, dizziness, and insomnia. Fortunately, most people can bring down their blood pressure naturally without medication with home remedies for low blood pressure (called hypotension). First, get to a healthy weight (these tips can help you get there). Then try these strategies to reduce the risk of heart disease.

1. Go for power walks
power walks

Hypertensive patients who went for fitness walks at a brisk pace lowered pressure by almost 8 mmHg over 6 mmHg. Exercise helps the heart use oxygen more efficiently, so it doesn’t work as hard to pump blood.

Get a vigorous cardio workout of at least 30 minutes on most days of the week for low blood pressure. Try increasing speed or distance so you keep challenging your ticker.

2. Breathe deeply

Slow breathing and meditative practices such as qigong, yoga, and tai chi decrease stress hormones, which elevate renin, a kidney enzyme that raises blood pressure. Try 5 minutes in the morning and at night for low blood pressure. Inhale deeply and expand your belly. Exhale and release all of your tension. (Try these stress-busting yoga poses to relieve tension.)

3. Pick potatoes

Loading up on potassium-rich fruits and vegetables is an important part of any blood pressure–lowering program, says Linda Van Horn, PhD, RD, a professor of preventive medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. Aim for 2,000 to 4,000 mg of potassium a day, she says.

(Are you at risk for the No. 1 cause of heart-related death?)

Top sources of potassium-rich produce to achieve low blood pressure include sweet potatoes…

…, tomatoes, orange juice, potatoes, bananas, kidney beans, peas, cantaloupe, honeydew melon, and dried fruits such as prunes and raisins.

4. Be salt smart

Cutting sodium means more than going easy on the saltshaker, which contributes just 15% of the sodium in the typical American diet. (For more ways to reduce your sodium, see 6 simple ways to lower your salt intake.) Watch for sodium in processed foods, Obarzanek warns. That’s where most of the sodium in your diet comes from, she says. Season foods with spices, herbs, lemon, and salt-free seasoning blends.

5. Indulge in dark chocolate

Dark chocolate varieties contain flavanols that make blood vessels more elastic and increase the chances of low blood pressure. In one study, 18% of patients who ate it every day saw blood pressure decrease. Have half an ounce daily, and make sure it contains at least 70% cocoa.

6. Take a supplement

In a review of 12 studies, researchers found that coenzyme Q10 reduced blood pressure by up to 17 mmHg over 10 mmHg.

The antioxidant, required for energy production, dilates blood vessels. Ask your doctor about taking a 60 to 100 mg supplement up to three times a day for low blood pressure.

7. Drink (a little) alcohol
red wine

According to a review of 15 studies, the less you drink, the lower your blood pressure will drop—to a point. A study of women at Boston’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital, for example, found that light drinking (defined as one-quarter to one-half a drink per day for a woman) may actually reduce blood pressure more than no drinks per day. (Check out your body on alcohol for more insight.)

8. Switch to decaf coffee

Caffeine can raise blood pressure by tightening blood vessels and by magnifying the effects of stress, says Jim Lane, PhD, an associate research professor at Duke and the lead author of the study. “When you’re under stress, your heart starts pumping a lot more blood, boosting blood pressure,” he says. “And caffeine exaggerates that effect.” If you drink a lot of joe, pour more decaf to protect your ticker with low blood pressure.

9. Take up tea
green tea

10. Work (a bit) less
work less

Putting in more than 41 hours per week at the office raises your risk of hypertension by 15%, according to a University of California, Irvine, study of 24,205 California residents. Doing overtime makes it hard to exercise and eat healthy, says Haiou Yang, PhD, the lead researcher. It may be difficult to clock out super-early in today’s tough economic times, but try to leave at a decent hour—so you can go to the gym or cook a healthy meal—as often as possible for low blood pressure. Follow these tips to make your weekends stress-free. Set an end-of-day message on your computer as a reminder to turn it off and go home.

11. Relax with music

*see How to deal with Anxiety-Stress in life? goodnewshealthandfitness.wordpress.com

Need to bring down your blood pressure a bit more than medication or lifestyle changes can do alone? The right tunes can help you get low blood pressure, according to researchers at the University of Florence in Italy. They asked 28 adults who were already taking hypertension medication to listen to soothing classical, Celtic, or Indian music for 30 minutes daily while breathing slowly. After a week, the listeners had lowered their average systolic reading by 3.2 points; a month later, readings were down 4.4 points.

12. Seek help for snoring
snoring help

It’s time to heed your partner’s complaints and get that snoring checked out. Loud, incessant snores are one of the main symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). University of Alabama researchers found that many sleep apnea sufferers also had high levels of aldosterone, a hormone that can boost blood pressure. In fact, it’s estimated that half of all people with sleep apnea have high blood pressure.

If you have sleep apnea, you may experience many brief yet potentially life-threatening interruptions in your breathing while you sleep. In addition to loud snoring, excessive daytime tiredness and early-morning headaches are also good clues. If you have high blood pressure, ask your doctor if OSA could be behind it; treating sleep apnea may lower aldosterone levels and improve BP.

13. Jump for soy
soy

A study from Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association found for the first time that replacing some of the refined carbohydrates in your diet to achieve low blood pressure with foods high in soy or milk protein, such as low-fat dairy, can bring down systolic blood pressure if you have hypertension or prehypertension.

10 Anti-Aging Beauty Secrets

“Here are the top 10 anti-aging beauty secrets.

1. Follow a Good Skin Care Regimen
Irrespective of your age, you need to follow a good skin care regimen for healthy skin. When your skin is healthy, it will not show early signs of aging.

Cleanse your face daily with a gentle cleanser, both in the morning and at night. This will keep your skin clean, soft and free of pore-clogging debris. When buying a cleanser, avoid those with high alcohol content and other drying agents.
Apply a good quality moisturizer over your entire face, neck, hands and legs twice daily. This will help prevent dry and aging skin.
Exfoliate your skin once a week with a gentle facial scrub. This will encourage skin cell renewal, making your skin look younger. It will also help get rid of dead skin cells and keep your skin smooth, healthy, bright and fresh.
2. Choose Skin Care Products Wisely
Many people make the mistake of using the wrong type of skin care products. This can cause tingling, itching, dryness and irritation. It’s easy to rectify or avoid this mistake.

Determine your skin type by analyzing your T-zone area and then choose suitable products to keep it healthy and young. Also, avoid using too many cosmetic products at the same time.
When you are past your mid-20s, use products with retinol, peptides and antioxidants. Retinol promotes an increase of collagen and elastic production. Peptides can stimulate collagen production and cell repair to help you get younger-looking skin. Antioxidants will protect your skin from the sun and speed up the natural skin repair system.
If you have any doubts, you can always consult a dermatologist for help find the right products for your skin care needs.

3. Wear Sunscreen Everyday
Sunscreen is the ultimate anti-aging tool recommended by beauty experts. Be it summer, winter, autumn or rainy days, you must not leave your home without applying a good quality sunscreen on any exposed body parts.

Too much exposure to the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays can damage your skin, particularly its elastin, and cause a loss of collagen. This in turn can lead to sun spots, wrinkles, an uneven tone, dryness, rough skin and sunburn.

Apply an SPF 15 (or greater) sunscreen every day, even in the winter. For maximum anti-aging benefits, make sure to apply sunscreen on your ears, neck, legs and hands along with your face.

4. Get Your Beauty Sleep Daily
To stay looking young for years, get 7 to 8 hours of beauty sleep daily without fail. In fact, sleep is considered the most powerful rejuvenating treatment to maintain youthfulness.

When you sleep, adrenaline and corticosteroid levels drop and the body starts to produce growth hormone. During this time, the repair and growth process of cells occurs. If you don’t get enough sleep, this function is impaired and leads to inflammation that causes many signs of aging like wrinkles, dull complexion and fines lines.

A good night’s sleep also has many health benefits like better memory, mood, attention and concentration as well as a reduced risk of heart attack and stroke.

To improve your sleep, maintain a regular bedtime, avoid caffeinated beverages before bedtime, take a warm bath with a few drops of aromatherapy oil in the evening, and sleep on the right mattress and pillows.

5. Exercise Daily
Exercise is good for your body and mind. Regular exercise improves blood flow and keeps your skin healthy and vibrant. It also regulates your hormones and promotes proper sleep.

According to a study published in the journal Circulation, exercise has anti-inflammatory potential and decreases the risk of developing inflammatory diseases like heart disease and obesity.

Exercise also combats the loss of stamina, muscle strength, balance and bone density that increases with age.

Do some sort of physical activity for 20 to 30 minutes daily. Activities that can help slow down the aging process are running, walking, dancing, cycling, gardening and even housework. Aerobic exercise classes and yoga also help a lot.

“Below are 6 good anti aging treatments that are natural and don’t involve going under the knife or other invasive medical procedures:
1. Sesame Oil….
2. Fish Oil

*see Health: Nutrition-Macronutrients Fats

According to studies, taking enough of fish oil supplements appears to have enormous health benefits including dramatic anti aging effects. Fish oil has anti inflammatory benefits, improves heart and immune functions and helps hair grow and skin look healthy. Specifically, taking these supplements regularly may lower the risk for a host of diseases associated with aging, including coronary heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, arthritis and even Alzheimer’s disease. Read here more about the amazing health benefits of omega 3 fish oil.

3. Limit white sugar consumption…
4. Antioxidants

Antioxidants, such as vitamins C and E, help fight free radicals that break down collagen and thus slowing aging process. A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in October 2007 found that people who ate foods rich in vitamin C had fewer wrinkles and less age-related dry skin than those whose diets contained only small amounts of the vitamin. Vitamin C also helps form collagen, which smooths fine lines and wrinkles. Vitamin C also seems to protect against UV sun rays, which can lead to freckles and a mottled complexion and does some repair and firming of the skin. Berries are packed with vitamin C as well as other nutrients, and are known to delay the aging process and to fight free radicals that damage our body. To learn more about the amazing healing properties of berries, have a look at my e-book The Healing Berry Guide. This e-book will teach you how to transform your health with berries.
Experts continue to argue whether antioxidants can prevent heart disease, but some of the evidence is highly persuasive. It is therefore a good idea to eat a lot of fruits and vegetables, which are full of vitamin C as well as other healthy nutrients. You can also read my article about the best ways to combine antioxidants in your daily diet. 9 Ways to Boost Glutathione draxe.com
“..What Is Glutathione?

Glutathione (GSH) is a peptide consisting of three key amino acids that plays several vital roles in the body. Longevity researchers believe that it is so pivotal to our health that the level of GSH in our cells is becoming a predictor of how long we will live! (2, 3, 4)..”

Top 9 Foods & Supplements to Boost Glutathione..

1. Milk Thistle

Used for centuries by traditional folk medicine all across the world, milk thistle has long been praised as a remedy for immune dysfunction. Specifically, silymarin, a unique flavonoid complex derived from the milk thistle plant, has been used for liver damage and biliary tract disease. According to scientists, the secret to milk thistle’s healing prowess is its ability to enhance GSH. Shown to boost glutathione levels in ethanol-induced rats, it was discovered that milk thistle could actually help protect the liver from toxicity in the presence of alcohol consumption; which is well-known to cause glutathione levels to plummet. (17)

2. Whey Protein

Whey protein replenishes glutathione by boosting cysteine which helps rebuild glutathione when it is depleted from an immune response. (18) According to a recent studies, whey protein is the ideal supplement to help naturally increase glutathione for both fighting cancer, strengthening the immune system, increasing metabolism, and reducing appetite. (19, 20) Rich in glutathione, it is extremely important to purchase the right type of whey protein. Avoid any whey protein that is processed, or protein isolate. I recommend grass-fed why or goat whey protein as a dietary supplement. You will want to use a whey protein powder that is all natural or organic (when possible) and is completely free of pesticides, hormones, genetically modified organisms, artificial sweeteners and is gluten free.

3. Sulfur Foods

Since the mid-1990s, it has been a well-established fact that GSH concentrations take a nosedive in the liver and lungs when sulphur amino acid intake is inadequate. (20) This is one of the many reasons I recommend sulfur-rich, cancer-fighting cruciferous vegetables as a critical part of any natural health regimen. These include:..

. NAC

The unbelievably effective asthma remedy N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) helps decrease the severity and frequency of wheezing and respiratory attacks by boosting glutathione and thinning bronchial mucus. NAC is actually a precursor to GSH and it has recently been proven highly efficient at treating neurocognitive issues like addiction, compulsive behaviors, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. (21) I recommend taking 200-500mg 1x daily.
Stethoscope and diabetes

5. α-Lipoic Acid

a-Lipoic Acid helps restore GSH levels with any immune system depletion. In fact, it is part of my Reverse Diabetes Naturally in 30 Days or Less plan. Only 300-1200 mg of alpha lipoic acid daily helps improves insulin sensitivity and reduces symptoms of diabetic neuropathy. It has also been shown clinically to restore total blood GSH status and lymphocyte function in HIV/AIDS patients. (22)

6. Methylation Nutrients (Vitamins B6, B9, B12, and biotin)

In the words of Dr. Mark Hyman, methylation ingredients “are perhaps the most critical to keep the body producing glutathione.” (23) The best (natural) way to keep your methylation ingredients at optimal levels is to simply eat these Top Folate Foods:..

7. Selenium

Selenium works as a powerful anti-oxidant and is required for your body to create GSH. Be sure to stock your refrigerator and pantry with these Top Selenium Foods: ..

8. Vitamin C & E

‘..Oxidative stress: Oxidative stress can be defined as the state in which your free radicals (from pollution, poor diet, stress, etc.) outnumber your antioxidant defenses (from healthy diet). Graying hair may be an indicator of oxidative stress-induced damage.10

Research has also shown that people with premature graying had a higher level of pro-oxidants and lower levels of antioxidants than those with normal hair.11

• Vitamin B12 deficiency: This is also linked to premature gray hair, and there is at least one report of pigmentation returning to hair after the vitamin deficiency was resolved.12..”

Detox fans who claim avoiding ACID food slows down ageing… and why the experts say they’re dangerously wrong, dailymail.co.uk
“…And because our blood is slightly alkaline, with a normal pH of between 7.35 and 7.45, our diet should reflect this.
The problem, say alkaliners, is that we eat too many ‘acid-forming’ foods — wheat, dairy, meat, seafood, sugar, coffee, tea, fizzy drinks and alcohol….

This they say causes a pH imbalance which apparently disrupts the body’s ability to regulate itself — leading to a range of problems from low energy and poor memory, headaches, bloating, muscle pain and insomnia to more serious conditions such as osteoporosis.

How Fast Can Alcohol Age You? Posted on 2/10/2012 | Jodi Sawyer, RN | doctoroz.com
“..Can drinking alcohol really speed up the aging process? Well, the truth is that yes, it can make you age faster by causing wrinkles. This includes premature wrinkles, loss of collagen, elasticity, redness, dehydration and puffiness. However, it’s the amount and frequency of your drinking that really matters. There are actually some recent studies that indicate that alcohol has some health benefits – when you drink in moderation.

To begin with, there are no nutrients in alcohol. In fact, alcohol can adversely affect your nutrition levels by causing a depletion in healthy nutrients that aid in carrying oxygen throughout your body. Specifically, alcohol can have a huge negative impact on your vitamin A level, which is a very important antioxidant for your skin/body and it is vital in the regeneration of new cells.

Vitamin A is also extremely important in the production of collagen. When you have lower amounts of collagen, you lose elasticity in your skin. Collagen and elasticity are what keep your skin supple, taut and looking young. ..”

Healthy lifestyle may slow aging in our cells By MICHELLE CASTILLO CBS NEWS September 17, 2013, 4:36 PM cbsnews.com
“It’s no secret that paying attention to diet, exercise, stress levels and getting social support may extend your life. But a new study shows healthy living may even reverse aging deep in our cells….
Ten of the subjects were asked to eat a plant-based diet high in fruits, vegetables and unrefined grains, but also low in fat and refined carbohydrates. They were also told to exercise moderately (meaning walking 30 minutes a day, six days a week) and reduced their stress through yoga, breathing and meditation. The subjects in this group were required to attend a weekly group support meeting….

Fitness: Benefits of Biking?

“My mom took this pic of me during my bike ride at Battle Creek Park while my parents did their morning walk in St. Paul on October 2014″

It’s National Bike to Work Day (Friday, May 15th 2015), so I decided to do a blog post on this special day. I “try” to bike to work as many days as possible as long as the weather holds up or I don’t have a big “commitment” before or after work that I need to “rush” to. I bike for many reasons (e.g. health, fitness, financial, etc..).

While looking for links to share on my facebook to challenge others to bike, I found this National Bike Challenge. I’m kind of behind in the competition (1st of May) as I started late (15th). However, it’ll be interesting to get the totals for calories burned, money saved from gas usage for a car if I did had to drive, and miles I biked after this 3-month challenge. Stay tune for updates on the #’s I tally from now till the end of the summer. I’ll be happy to hear yours (post below) if you do decide to join this challenge…I challenge you!

One simple way to prepare for winter is to invest in a bike with internal geared hubs.

Why Ride in Winter?

At first, it might seem to be a daunting activity—bundling yourself up to ride through winter snow, ice, rain or even just cooler temperatures. But give it a chance. I’ve been a successful 4-season rider for many years now, and I live in Minneapolis. I have never regretted trading my commute by car for a commute by bicycle.

The rewards are many. I never get stuck in traffic. I never have to wait for a tow truck to get a jump-start or change my oil or pay for gas. The peace and solitude of an early morning ride through a light January snow is something that I would never give up.

Regardless of the weather, you benefit greatly by riding a bike more. The exercise alone is an almost unimaginable reward. Instead of sedentary transport by car, the very act of going from place to place by bike gets your heart pumping, blood flowing and the calories burning. …”

Sal: I like to ride during the winter as it beats waiting to warm-up your vehicle just to drive 1 mile from work. I rather use that time and ride instead of wasting that gas and it’s great exercise. Another plus is you don’t have to deal with getting your car stuck due to snow plows causing snow drifts. However, I’ve learned to bike more when the roads are clear of ice as it’s safer. I then use my car if it’s too slippery, slushy, or too “rough”.

Fitness Exercises to Maintain

The Best Strength Exercises for Cyclists January 12, 2015 By Mike Schultz .trainingpeaks.com
“..Cycling happens one leg at a time, is predominately aerobic and requires repeated force production. Cycling also requires a strong core for handling your bike, climbing and overall endurance. There are many exercises that can address these needs but there are a few, especially when combined, which will target the entire body in a cycling specific way. Body weight exercises can be done anywhere, from your home, gym or office, while exercises incorporating weights are best done in a gym setting with proper footwear, form and spotters if needed…”
