10 Ways You Can Stay Safe When Out On Morning Runs By Mile Posts Published Sep. 5, 2014 Updated Dec. 7, 2016 womensrunning.competitor.com
“..I personally have had run-ins with crazy people in cars. I’ve had people swerve towards me while I was pushing my kids in the running stroller, and sadly I saw a woman who died from being hit and dragged by a trash truck not 15 feet from the front door of my townhouse. These incidents have kept me on my toes while running, so to say. I know that keeping myself safe is my priority. I can’t rely on others to see me or for people to act in a manner that they should.

Here are some of my tips for staying safe on early morning runs—though many of these tips work for other times as well!…”

Top 10 Running Surfaces Marc Bloom

Not all running surfaces are created equal – we’ve rated the top 10, from asphalt to woodland
“..“In the summer, when I run mainly on grass, my whole body seems to relax,” said two-time world indoor champion Marcus O’Sullivan after winning a mile race. Concrete, he noticed, sent shock waves through his body and was a surefire route to long-term damage. There was only one way to sum it up: “I’m convinced that if you run on softer surfaces, your career will last longer.” ..”

“Hard”

Don’t run on hard surfaces

Jog in parks or on grass as running on solid surfaces like concrete or on roads can give you knee problems
“..Hard surface runs can lead to inflammation like Achilles tendonitis,( a condition where the tendon that connects the heel bone to lower leg becomes inflamed, causing heel pain), inflammation of the tendons and muscles in the front and outside of the leg, the knees cap and the lower leg bone, or tibia. Sometimes repetitive impact also can lead to stress fractures in the small bones of the foot or ankle, which can ultimately result in breakage. Changing your running surface, “is much like increasing your mileage, changing your shoes or some other aspect of your training program.” Abrupt changes can be risky so notice your problems first before going on any coclusion…”

5. Synthetic Track
Nowadays, almost all British tracks are made of modern synthetic materials. While most people think of them purely as fast surfaces for fast runners, they’re more versatile than that.
Pros: Synthetic tracks provide a reasonably forgiving surface and, being exactly 400 metres around, make measuring distances and timing sessions easy.
Cons: With two long curves on every lap, ankles, knees and hips are put under more stress than usual. Longer runs also become very tedious.
Conclusion: Tracks are ideal for speedwork, but you have to be dedicated to use them for anything else.
Rating: 7…”

Sal: I personally prefer running on a “rubber” outdoor track…

…it’s easier on my knees and I don’t have to worry about the other “outdoor elements” (e.g. unexpected uneven surfaces, traffic, etc..)

Is running on concrete bad for your knees?

s Running on Pavement Risky? updated Jul 29, 2017
by Paul Ingraham, Vancouver, Canada bio painscience.com
Hard-surface running may be risk factor for running injuries like patellofemoral pain, IT band syndrome, shin splints, and plantar fasciitis

“…there’s a lot of research about impact, some of it concerning different surfaces, just a few of those specifically about the relationship between impact and injury. As of the end of 2016, there were only about 18 decent experiments, with too many differences between them to clearly interpret. A review of these by van der Worp et al concluded just a single thing with confidence: a history of stress fractures is associated with a higher impact forces in running gait.13..”

Is running on hard surfaces really bad for your knees?
“…The bottom line: When it comes to injury, researchers currently believe no single surface is better than another. Concrete, for instance, is hard, but it’s typically consistent. Asphalt roads often are cambered for drainage, while the unpredictability of many grass and dirt surfaces can cause instant injuries. (Mickey Mantle famously injured his right knee during the 1951 World Series when he sprinted across a baseball field and caught his shoe on a sprinkler.) Your best bet for avoiding injuries, experts say: mix it up. Incorporate a variety of surfaces into your training, including grass, dirt, asphalt, concrete, and tracks…”

Fitness: How to teach kids ice skating?

Kids getting antsy during the long winter season? Instead of them playing video games indoors, get them outside to ice skate! How to teach them?

When I took my 8 yr. old nephew to the John Oval in Roseville (Minnesota), one of the first tips I gave is how to dress. I asked him if he had the right pair of gloves. It’s better to have “water resistant” gloves instead of the material that might soak water. In fact, my nephew was wearing jeans. I told him it would’ve been better to wear wind pants over his jeans or snow pants as an alternative. This is because when you are skating for the first time, you’ll fall and get ice all over. Thus, it’ll melt and go through your “non-water resistant” pants. The child might get wet and start getting cold, which might get him/her sick.

Exercise Physiology

Exercising in the Heat by Jason Karp, PhD on May 18, 2010 ideafit.com
‘..Hot and humid days present an even greater challenge. When it’s humid, the air is already saturated with water, limiting the amount of sweat evaporating from your skin. As a result, the ability to dissipate heat is minimized and core body temperature rises rapidly, leading to hyperthermia. In extreme cases, hyperthermia can lead to heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Heat exhaustion, the most common heat illness, is defined as the inability to continue exercise in the heat (Armstrong 2000). Heat stroke is a medical emergency and occurs when body temperature rises to a level that causes damage to the body’s tissues (> 103–104 degrees Fahrenheit, or > 39–40 degrees Celsius) (Armstrong 2000).

In an attempt to prevent body temperature from rising to dangerous levels during exercise, your central nervous system orchestrates a complex response in which blood vessels supplying your inner organs constrict, while blood vessels supplying your skin dilate, causing blood to be diverted away from inner organs and directed outward to the skin to increase cooling through the convection of air over your skin’s surface. It may seem somewhat counterintuitive that as your core body temperature is rising during exercise in the heat, skin temperature decreases as a result of convective cooling. More blood being directed to the skin means less blood (and therefore less oxygen) going to the active muscles, causing exercise intensity to decrease and the perception of effort to increase. ..

Recommendations for Exercising in the Heat

The two most important things your clients can do to prepare themselves for their summer outdoor training sessions are hydrate and acclimatize.

What You Should Know About Heat Illness and Exercise By Dr. Hamid Sadri 1st Choice Healthcare active.com

Considerations for Exercising in the Heat
Christopher Gagliardi // Program Design, Implementation and Modification // 9/9/2013 acefitness.org
‘..

So what do you need to know as a trainer? First, it’s important to have a good understanding of the heat index chart. You don’t need to memorize it, but you do need to understand the relationship between humidity and temperature (conditions become more dangerous as humidity and heat increase)…
Here are some tips to offer your clients before they begin exercising in the heat:

Begin exercise in the heat gradually as acclimatization typically takes seven to 10 days.
Always wear light-weight, well-ventilated clothing. Wear light-colored clothing if exercising in the sun as white reflects heat better than other colors.
Never wear non-breathable clothing.
Cotton is a good choice for exercising in the heat because it readily soaks up sweat and allows for evaporation.
Replace body fluids as they are lost. Recording daily body weight is an excellent way to prevent cumulative dehydration.
Air movement is critical for adequate cooling.

Heat Stroke in Sports: Causes, Prevention and Treatment gssiweb.org
‘..Early Warning.

Early warning signs of impending heat stroke may include irritability, confusion, apathy, belligerence, emotional instability, or irrational behavior…

Treating Heat Stroke

Medical Emergency.

In heat stroke, every minute counts. When core temperature is very high, body and brain cells begin to die, so fast cooling is vital. Early features are subtle central nervous system (CNS) changes — altered cognition or behavior — and core temperature over 104-105 °F (40.0-40.6 °C). When an athlete collapses, the best gauge of core temperature is rectal temperature; oral, axillary, or ear-canal temperature will not do. Advanced features are collapse with wet skin, core temperature over 106-107 °F (41.1- 41.7 °C) and striking CNS changes — delirium, stupor, seizures, or coma (Roberts, 1998).

Cool First.

Field treatment is fast cooling. No faster way to cool exists than dumping the athlete into an ice-water tub. Submerge the trunk — shoulders to hip joints. Research suggests ice-water immersion cools runners twice as fast as air exposure while wrapped in wet towels (Armstrong et al., 1996). The Marines also use ice-water cooling (Kark et al., 1996). Recent field research with volunteer runners suggests cold water may cool as fast as ice water (Clements et al., 2002)…’

5 Tips for Healthy Eating During a Summer Ramadan huffingtonpost.com
Know the Foods That Hydrate Your Body
“…When fasting, we’re slowly being dehydrated over the course of the day, so once we break our fast and during the non-fasting period we need to have foods that put water into our body, not deplete it further. It can be difficult to eat a lot of watermelon or squash, even though they’re super-hydrating foods, but you can make juices out of the fruits and soups out of the vegetables to give your body the additional water it needs. Avoid salty spice mixes and condiments that sneak their way into our rice and meat dishes only to leave us wondering why we’re so thirsty afterwards. A great way to break the fast is to enjoy your favorite dates, of course, but also consider having coconut water, or making smoothies, coolers and fruity drinks which are super-hydrating. They can be consumed at the Suhoor (pre-dawn meal before the fasting day begins) or at the Iftar (meal at the time of breaking the fast) followed by soup to preface your main meal. Consider limiting coffee and tea which are very dehydrating to the body, to about half of what you normally drink…”

Acne vulgaris. Prevention, Natural home remedies – Grow Youthful growyouthful.com

“..Causes of acne

Acne is most common at puberty because the surge of hormones at this time stimulates the sebaceous (oil-producing glands) in the skin and makes them prone to blockages and infection. In adolescence, acne is usually caused by an increase in testosterone that occurs in both males and females at this time. The testosterone is associated with an enlargement of the sebaceous glands and an increase in sebum (waxy oil) production.
Several hormones have been linked to acne, including those that change around puberty and menstrual cycles. Taking pharmaceutical anabolic steroids (which mimic testosterone) can also cause acne.
Milk. Dairy products can cause acne. (3,5,9) Dairy products promote a hormone called insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1), and may also promote the production of some types of estrogens. IGF-1 levels peak in the teenage years, and may be abnormally high if you consume a lot of dairy products.
I suspect this may apply more to pasteurised dairy products rather than raw dairy products, but could not find any research to confirm this.
Sugar. A high-sugar, high-starch diet is associated with acne. (3,4)

Oily processed foods.

The 2 MOST Common Causes Of Eczema And 7 Ways To REVERSE It! By Dr. Mark Hyman healthy-holistic-living.com
“..Let me be more specific. If I had to narrow down eczema to two primary causes, I would say:

Leaky gut. Medically called “increased intestinal permeability”. This is a sign of a good gut gone bad. Leaky gut creates a low-grade inflammation in reaction to food particles (deemed foreign by your immune system) that literally leak through your gut wall. This causes food sensitivities, especially to gluten and dairy, which are the biggest food causes of eczema. Leaky gut also triggers many other health problems including fatigue, brain fog, headaches, depression, allergies, sinus problems, irritable bowel, reflux, joint pain, skin diseases such as acne and eczema, autoimmune diseases and more. Inflammation also causes weight gain which is triggered byinsulin resistance, food sensitivities and food allergies.
Abnormal gut flora. Getting rid of the overgrowth of bad bugs and yeast can make a huge difference to eliminate eczema. This is called dysbiosis. It is when the 3 pounds of bugs in your gut become out of balance driving inflammation. Yeast overgrowth is a common cause of eczema. It can be caused by a high-sugar, refined carb, low-fiber, processed diet. Yeast overgrowth also can be triggered by the use of antibiotics, steroids, hormones and even the birth control pill.

How to get a radiant glow, banish wrinkles, and keep skin supple and soft—one bite at a time
Jessica Girdwain November 6, 2013

“You already know that filling your diet with power foods—like dark leafy greens, dark chocolate, citrus—can help beat chronic conditions like heart disease and diabetes. But did you know that certain foods can also work wonders on your skin?

“There’s a growing body of research showing that diet really does affect your complexion,” says Jessica Wu, MD, a dermatologist in Los Angeles and author of Feed Your Face. “What you eat can affect your hormone balance, cause acne, and create or lessen inflammation, which is associated with skin aging.”

In fact, what you eat can be as important as the serums and creams you apply on your skin, says Dr. Wu. That’s why we rounded up 25 foods that are good for you—and fantastic for your skin. Here’s to you, gorgeous!

Natural Skin Health: Dermatologist’s Diet Recommendations for Healthy Skin

by Cynthia Bailey, M.D. on October 17, 2009 in Diet, Nutrition, & Natural Health .drbaileyskincare.com

“The foods you eat should be packed with vitamins and minerals. When most of the foods you eat are nutritionally rich foods, your skin will be its healthiest and most beautiful! This is far from the magic bullet we all want in our fast paced lives; healthy eating requires real commitment.

What are nutritionally rich foods? Every time we buy manufactured food there’s nutritional information on the labels. In fact, we’re bombarded with nutritional information. Even junk foods list vitamin content. It’s confusing and so I use my common sense to figure out what foods are packed with vitamins and minerals. I recommend that the majority of what you eat be high nutrition foods including: ..

The Dermatologist’s Diet for Natural Skin Health

* Eat mostly vegetables, fruits and grains- organic or naturally farmed.
* Limit meats, fish, dairy and eggs-use them as an embellishment to your meal, not the main portion of what you eat-and be sure they’re from naturally farmed animals
* Use virgin olive oil
* Consider processed foods as a treat, not your main source of calories and nutrition”

How To Get Glowing Skin – Foods for Glowing Skin

‘Published on Jul 30, 2014

Most women (and some men) go to great lengths to make sure that their skin glows and they look attractive. However, beauty is skin deep and what you eat determines how you look. A diet rich in antioxidants and vitamins is considered good for your skin. But, if you are confused as to what food items you should eat, we give you a list of 10 foods that can make you more beautiful from within:

Sweet potatoes: They contain vitamin A which is anti-inflammatory and helps fight off acne-causing bacteria. It also has vitamin C which helps prevent acne and heals it if you already have it.

Home Remedies to Solve Dry Skin Problems This Winter
Winter is a season that brings many pleasurable experiences, but dry skin is not one of them. It is one of the most common problems that people have to deal with during the winter days.

The skin tends to become drier due to the drop in the temperature and also humidity. This causes the skin to become dehydrated, leading to dry skin patches as well as irritation or itchiness.

Best Moisturizer for Dry Sensitive Skin

1. Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is one of the popular and effective treatments for dry skin during the winter months. It contains ample amounts of fatty acids that can compensate for any loss of moisture from the skin.

It also has protein as well as vitamin E that help retain moisture in your skin.

Also, its antioxidant property is good for your skin’s overall health. In addition, because this oil is nongreasy, it is easily absorbed by the skin.

* Warm up some coconut oil in a microwave for a few seconds and apply it on your skin before bathing. Massage it gently so that the oil penetrates into the skin. Wait 10 minutes, then take a bath or shower. Repeat this remedy once daily.

* When suffering from extremely dry skin, you can apply coconut on your somewhat damp skin after taking a bath.

2. Honey
Honey is considered another natural moisturizer loaded with antioxidant, antimicrobial and humectant properties.

Any of the following remedies can be used once daily:

* Before taking a bath or shower, rub some raw honey all over your body and massage gently using circular motions. Wait 10 minutes, then take a bath or shower.

* Mix equal amounts of honey and glycerin. Apply it on your hands, wait 10 minutes and then rinse it off with lukewarm water.

3. Olive Oil

Another effective remedy for dry skin is definitely olive oil. Olive oil contains antioxidants such as vitamin E that help neutralize the oxidant effect of free radicals that damage collagen, which causes skin dryness. It also works as a great natural moisturizer.

Plus, the healthy fatty acids in it can soothe and condition dry skin all over your body.

* For daily use, rub some lukewarm olive oil on your hands, legs and other areas with dry skin. Massage lightly using circular motions and wait 30 minutes. Take a shower to rinse it off, then apply a light moisturizer.

* For weekly use, add enough olive oil to 1 tablespoon of brown sugar to make a paste. Dampen your skin, then use this mixture as a gentle scrub. Leave it for 15 minutes, then wash it off with lukewarm water.

4. Milk Cream

Another milk-based product that can combat skin dryness is milk cream. The high-fat content in milk cream works as a natural moisturizer for dry skin.

The lactic acid in milk helps exfoliate the dry, dead surface of the skin and accelerates collagen production, too. It also helps maintain the proper pH balance of your skin.

* For daily use, rub some fresh milk cream on your dry skin. Allow it to sit for 10 minutes, then rinse it off thoroughly with lukewarm water.

* Another option for daily use is to thoroughly mix 1 teaspoon each of milk cream and milk. Stir in a few drops of lemon juice. Apply the paste on your face, hands, and legs. Leave it on for 15 minutes, then wash it off with water.

5. Aloe Vera

When it comes to skin dryness, aloe vera is just the ingredient that you need to make your skin soft and vibrant even during the winter season.

It acts as a wonderful moisturizer and improves your skin tone. It also relieves itchiness and prevents cracking and flaking associated with dry skin.

A study published in Skin Research and Technology reports that freeze-dried aloe vera extract is effective at improving skin hydration due to its humectant properties.

1. Extract the gel from an aloe vera leaf.
2. Apply it all over your body.
3. Massage for a few minutes to help the gel penetrate deep into the skin.
4. Wait 30 minutes, then rinse it off using lukewarm water.
5. Do this once or twice daily.

Health: How to “fight” the flu?

I’ve rarely catch the flu and when I do, I do all these “home remedies” to fight it without any prescription meds (e.g. Tami Flu). I average “one” or “no” flu a season. I never had to get a vaccination at all…maybe as a kid, but never as an adult. In fact, this past winter season, I didn’t catch it all! I decided to do a blog on this topic today after chatting with someone that has it, which I asked her ..during the summer!? I did this to give her some “natural” remedies to fight this…

CAUSES

What are the causes of the flu (influenza)?
The flu (influenza) viruses
.medicinenet.com
“…influenza viruses cause the flu and are divided into three types, designated A, B, and C. Influenza types A and B are responsible for epidemics of respiratory illness that occur almost every winter and are often associated with increased rates of hospitalization and death. Influenza type C differs from types A and B in some important ways. Type C infection usually causes either a very mild respiratory illness or no symptoms at all; it does not cause epidemics and does not have the severe public-health impact of influenza types A and B. Efforts to control the impact of influenza are aimed at types A and B, and the remainder of this discussion will be devoted only to these two types….”
Flu Attack! How a Virus Invades Your Body
January 06, 2014 articles.mercola.com
https://youtu.be/Rpj0emEGShQ

“… The video above gives a wonderfully clear illustration of what happens when someone nearby you sneezes… and you end up inhaling the virus. It’s said that a single sneeze may produce up to 40,000 droplets, which may leave your mouth at speeds of more than 200 miles per hour.1 While some of the heavier droplets will fall to the floor, others remain airborne and are quickly circulated around the room. If the droplet is infected with a virus, and you inhale it, the video shows how a single virus can quickly begin producing millions of copies within your cells.

It’s a frightening prospect, until you realize that your body has more than 1 trillion cells – making 1 million viruses a mere drop in the bucket.

Also important, your body is equipped with its own highly effective defense system – your immune system – that starts killing viruses almost as quickly as they are produced. As long as your immune system can stay one step ahead of the virus, you’ll feel better again quickly… and in some cases may not even know you were “sick.”

Preparing Yourself for the Flu Season Naturally

By Catherine Clinton ND, Clinic of Natural Medicine naturopathic.org
“Each winter the influenza virus wreaks havoc on our ability to work and play. Symptoms of the flu include fever, fatigue, muscle aches, headache, runny nose, cough and stomach symptoms like nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Sometimes a flu virus can come on slowly or it can hit suddenly without much notice. Each year this leads people to wonder how they can prevent themselves and their family from getting the flu. Naturopathic prevention and treatment of the flu virus includes vitamins and minerals, botanical medicine and lifestyle recommendations….

Lifestyle tips for the prevention and treatment of the flu:

Sleep- Maintaining a balanced sleep routine is one way to keep our immune system healthy. Adults need 7 to 9 hours of sleep each night to rejuvenate for the next day. Consistent inadequate sleep lowers the body’s defenses needed for fighting viral infections.

Stress- While stress is a part of everyday life; excessive stress can decrease immune function and make it easier to come down with the flu. Establishing stress management techniques like deep breathing, exercise, yoga or meditation can help ensure that every day stress won’t leave you vulnerable to the flu.

Diet- A diet rich in fruits, vegetables and quality proteins is a foundation for a healthy immune system. Studies have shown that eating a sugary snack or meal can depress the immune system for several hours, creating a window of time during which it is easier to get the flu. Avoiding excessive sugar can keep the immune system working at the level needed to fend off viral infections, like the flu….

“…Rebuke the infection of the sinuses.
Lay hands on your face and order the sinuses to open, and the pus to flow out. Order the sinuses to heal.
Pray for the arms to become the same length (this corrects any twists in the spine) and order the swelling of the sinuses to disappear.
Avoid nicotine (no problem after I became a Christian) and caffeine.

“.. So I did everything I thought of – I commanded any spirits of infirmity to leave me, I came against the sickness in Jesus name, I cast it out my body, but it got progressively worse. The body chills started which led to body pain. I kept running to the bathroom wanting to throw up. I prayed throughout the day for my healing because I did not want to take more time off work! By the time I got home, all I could do was lie in bed and literally cry like a baby from the pain. I could not get up because my dizziness was so severe I kept falling all over the place.

As I lay in bed in tears, it got to the point of me now begging God for healing. “Please Lord, I don’t even know what to pray anymore!”
Suddenly and as clear as day the words “JESUS IS LORD” flashed in my mind. I just went with it. As loudly as I could muster, halfway into my pillow, I declared, “Jesus is Lord… Jesus is Lord…sickness-Jesus is Lord, so get away from me.”

Within twenty minutes I was as right as rain! The dizziness and fever went away and so did the body pain! I was able to eat something for the first time that day. And I had sweet sleep (Proverbs 3:24). It was as if I could feel the illness dissolve…”
